Red flag

I saw a example sentence of the phrase red flag, but I don't understand what the sentence means.

Learn to recognize red flags that might indicate your child is having problems with self-esteem.

Shouldn't "Learn" be gerund form???? or it's the abbeviation of "to learn" ??

And please explain the meaning of this sentence, Thanks:)

Red flag is symbolic for "warning sign." A "red flag" might be that the child does not want to play with other children.

The verb "learn" is imperative.
