Recovering ...

What does it mean when somebody says of himself/herself as a joke: "I'm a recovering Certified Public Accountant". But this person does something else for a living.

Is it the same as "I'm a recovering alcoholic"?

Top answer

Yes, being a Certified Public Accountant is humorously portrayed as a bad thing, or something to be ashamed of, like being an alcoholic.

I don't think it has much to do with alcoholism. Can you tell us more about this person? I'm especially curious about the "recovering" bit. What illness, difficulty, or hardship are they "recovering" from?
