Recommended that

Hello!

When we use verbs such as recommend, suggest, etc...the way we use them can feel a bit tricky for us, learners.
I know that if we want to recommend something to someone we would say something like:

I recommend that you go to the nearest shop.

It is okay, I am getting used to it.

My question is: should we use the same structure (infinitive, after that) in the past, the far past?
For instance, if we date back to 30 years ago, would I say:

He recommended that I join the army.

I guess it is the correct way, but I would like to be sure since it feels, to me, as learner, even stranger than in the present.

Thank you in advance!
