The doctor recommended me .......... on a strict diet.

Is d) the right answer?

That 'me' it's what makes me doub. I think recommend can be followed by -ing but in this case I think it's not possible.

So is it TO GO the correct answer? Why? Can be followed by an infinitive? Isn't recomend similar to suggest, i.e. followed by either -ing or a that clause with a subjuntive verb?

"Recommend" is used one of the following three ways:

1) The doctor recommended his quitting smoking.
2) The doctor recommended him to quit smoking.
3) The doctor recommended he (should) quit smoking.

"Should do" is BrE version and "Do" is AmE version. Maybe online we have more AmE speakers than BrE speakers.
