Vocabulary

recognize or perceive the difference v. distinguish

I would like to ask about to different meaning of discriminate in the Wordweb.

1) Recognize or perceive the difference. [Wordweb do not give an example or synonym for this.]

3) Distinguish "I could not distinguish the different tastes in this complicated dish.

What are the differences between these two meanings?

Thank you.

hhtt What are the differences between these two meanings? Your #3 does not require the word 'different', since 'distinguish' means to differentiate perceptions.

That is just the example sentence. I would like to ask about the difference between 1 and 3 i.e "recognize or perceive the difference between" and "distinguish"

Thank you.

I have given that to you with the definition I have already provided.

"recognize or perceive the difference between" = "distinguish"

But WordWeb classifies them 1 and 3 as different definitions, but they are the same, then the dictionary is wrong.

Thank you.

They are different in the way I have indicated. It is not a great difference.

hhtt then the dictionary is wrong.
Why do you call the dictionary wrong if it gives several similar, correct definitions?
The dictionary would be wrong if one of the definitions was incorrect.
