receive a period of conditioning/adapting to the physical demands of the sport

All drivers who enter Formula One need to receive a period of conditioning to the physical demands of the sport.

HI,

Is "conditioning" in the above equivalent to "adapting/adjusting?" Thanks.

Adapted to the physical demands is probably closest. It really means that the drivers have to take physical training to be fit enought to drive well.
