Receding into the white pools ...

Hi

One guy (Tom) was lying on the ground dying. The other one bent over him and was looking at him.

Tom's pupils were losing their focus, receding into the white pools of the eyes.

I understand that Tom's eyes couldn't focus on the guy looking at him, but how do you understand that they were receding into the white pools of the eyes?

Newguest Tom's pupils were losing their focus, receding into the white pools of the eyes. I don't think it's very effective, Newguest. I'd call it an illusion.

  • The pupil is only a black hole, surrounded by the iris.
  • I believe when some people die, their eyes roll upward (or backward), so the pupils effectively disappear back into the sockets.

Hi Avangi.

So in your opinion it probably means that the dying guy's eyes were moving upward and the other guy could see the whites of the eyes at that moment?

That's about it.

As a verb, "receding" usually describes something moving away from us, appearing smaller and smaller, perhaps until it disappears.

As an adjective, we often hear "receding chin" and "receding hair line."

Of course in the case of the hair, it could conceivably be taken as a verbal, indicating that the hair line was gradually (over time) moving backward o
