reasons and seasons

People who work with their bodies are as relevant as those who work with their minds -- even though society has, through the ages, tended to favor one or the other based on the reasons or the seasons. Try to acknowledge and honor different reasons and seasons.

In the above passage, what is this 'reasons and/or seasons'? I'm pretty sure it is no different from when you simply say '(the) reasons.' What does this saying mean and where does it come from?
