Reason why

I have seen both 'reason' and 'reason why' as in 'that's the reason why this happened' or 'that's the reason this happened' etc.

Which is right - reason or reason why? Some people say 'why' is redundant, others say it's necessary.

Thank you.

Thanks, Clive. So I take it they're both okay, but which do you think sounds more professional, especially in the written form?

PhilipThe reason she is crying is [that] she has been hurt.
I prefer: She is crying because she has been hurt.
