Reason for the difference

Hi. I think for no. 1 both the phrases "the meaning of the following phrases" and "the meanings of the following phrases" are correct, although I think the former is used more often. Now, unlike no. 1, for no. 2, I believe only the phrase "the names of the following people" is correct. If I'm correct, why is that? Thank you in advance for your help.

1. Please write the meaning/meanings of the following phrases on your paper.
