Reason ... because

Hi

I often hear native speakers (and of course non-natives) use because with reason. Is it natural?

The reason I let her was because she was not feeling well.

Wouldn't it be better without because?

Thanks,

Tom

It's natural in the sense that people use it quite often. Nevertheless, English teachers inveigh against it, saying "It's not 'The reason is because'; it's 'The reason is that'".
