Really basic question

Why are words such as "shipwreck" and "train wreck" different from structure?
I mean why is shipwreck only one word but train wreck is consisted of but words?
Aren't they similar in nature?

Top answer

Just time, I suppose. It takes time for compound nouns to grow together, and we've had ships much longer than we've had trains.
