Really basic problems with planning a lesson on forming and answering questions in the simple past (compared to past continuous)

hello i'm currently taking my celfTESOL course and im on the second T.P. lesson, i really enjoyed the first on vocabulary and now im planning for the second on tenses i am finding it quite to find some basic info

im gonna start by introducing some example questions

'“did you walk the coastal path over the weekend ”? Past simple

did+subject+base verb

“yes I did, I
walked ten miles of the path” yes+subject+helping verb (did)+ed

What were they doing for charity? ”? Past continuous

helping verb (to be)+infinitive verb

do we know that what they were doing has finished? No, possibility not.

Is it still continuing? Possibly

“they were taking part in a sponsored fast ”
subject+helping verb(to be)

i never realised i would find this so confusing before siging up for the course and i feel ive hit a barrier in my knowledge and my ability to find info

am i going the right direction, i think if i have a solid introduction i will be able to find actviities easily enough...
