"realize benefits" sense in context

Context: "This tool helps them to realize benefits such as reducing support costs".

What is the sense of "realize" in that phrase?

Is it "grasp mentally", or "convert into fact"? I trend to the latter, but I'm not sure.

Thanks a lot in advance.

While we normally use 'realize' to mean 'grasp mentally' if we take the word apart and look at its elements, we see that it originally meant 'to make real'. Your interpretation here is correct.
