Real-time vs real time

When referring to the actual time during which a process takes place or an event occurs, when, if ever, should you hyphenate 'real time'?

  1. Always use a hyphen.
  2. A hyphen is always optional.
  3. A hyphen should always be used when functioning as an adjective.
  4. A hyphen can be used only when functioning as an adjective.
  5. Real time should never be hyphenated.

Thank you.

Eddie88 when, if ever, should you hyphenate 'real time'? There is leeway for personal opinion, as this sort of term does not have a prescriptive form, but is in flux. However, I would certainly choose 4.
