Real Conditional

I was being observed in my class by my boss (I hate it) teaching Real Conditionals. I wrote the sentence "If it is raining, I will bring my umbrella." The boss said this is incorrect. It should be "If it is raining, I bring my umbrella." But, what if I'm in a building and don't know if it is raining? It's possible that it it is not raining and I won't need the umbrella.
I was teaching that you when you use real conditional you use a form of present tense with either present simple or future tense.
Am I right? Also, is this 1st Conditional has present situation with future possibility, right? Would this Present Continuous fit in with 1st Conditionals? I'm getting a headache. :0)
