Read/read out

Sir,

1.I read a story.

2.He read out a story.

What is difference in meaning between "read" and "read out".

Thanks.

'Read out' clearly indicates that the story was read aloud; 'read' could be either aloud (to an audience, presumably) or silently to oneself.
