Reading numbers

I have a test and i need to know if I have to say "and" when I'm reading a number.

Top answer

When reading numbers, "and" is usually used only on the last group of numbers in an amount. For example, "I spent $132 on books" would be read "I spent one hundred AND thirty-two dollars on books" or "We flew 1,230 miles" would be read "We flew one thousand (pause for the comma) two hundred AND thirty miles". You would not use "and" if it were a phone number, or an amount under 100.

  • For example, "My phone number is 555-1234" would be read "My phone number if five five five (pause for the dash) one two three four" or "I saw 23 dogs at the park" would be read "I saw twenty-three dogs at the park".
