Reading contractions instead?

When we read text, is it alright to read short forms or contractions of the text instead, similar to as in spoken English? For example:

Read the text, 'They could not speak English a few years ago.' as "They couldn't speak English a few years ago.'; 'Thomas Edison did not go to school.' as 'Thomas Edison didn't go to school.'

Normally you should read the text as it is written. If you insert contractions then you may make the text seem more informal than it actually is.
