Reading book

I want to ask you whether the sentece I read a book yesterday means that I read the whole book.

If yes, then when I want to express the activity of reading do I have to say I was reading a book for 2 hours yesterday? I think that simple past - I read a book for 2 hours yesterday would not work in this case. Am I right?
