Reading aloud

Hallo,
I was wondering whether it would be a good idea to read literature aloud to practise speaking and - for me as non-native speaker - get more used to the sound of the language; perhaps a little bit like Demosthenes.

What kind of text could you recommend? Monologues from Shakespeare's plays are surely a good start, but is there anything more recent which could be recommended? In German, I would probably recommend Kleist - in my opinion the author of superb German - but alas, my knowledge of English literature is rather limited.
Thank you for your comments,
Gunter

  • Thank you for your comments,[/nq] Perhaps Dickens, there are all sorts of characters with all sorts of speech types as well as the good prose of Dickens himself.

For modern English texts, I would recommend anything written by: Graham Greene, George Orwell, Daphne DuMaurier,
E.M.Forster.
