Read the tea leaves

Hi

Could you please tell me if the idiom read the tea leaves common among native speakers? Would it sound OK in everyday English?

I think you are over-reading the tea leaves, that's all.

Thanks,

Tom

It isn't common these days as most people use teabags, so there are no loose tea leaves remaining at the bottom of the cup when they've drunk the tea.
