Read the steps: what does it mean?

I am translating the short story and I can't understand what the word "steps" means here:
At the meeting, first they read the steps and the Serenity prayer.
How is it linked to a church? (Context: Alateen meeting at a Lutheran church)

I believe this is another context issue. " It sounds like part of a standard ritual. Eg, "The twelve steps to serenity/sobriety," in Alcoholics Anonymous..

I expect "Steps" should be capitalized, like the "Serenity prayer."
