Read the newspaper or a newspaper?

Hi. Please help. What is the correct response, the newspaper or a newspaper? Should both be correct depending on context? Also, could the "the newspaper" be correct if that's what B does routinely? Thank you for your help in advance.

(A is asking B)
A: What do you do in the evening?
B: I read the/a newspaper.

If it is understood which newspaper it is, at least in the speaker's mind, then the newspaper is appropriate. If, for instance, B reads a variety of different newspapers, then a newspaper would be better.
