Read sth as sth

Hello there. I have a couple of questions regarding the following four sentences:

(A) They read this Chinese character as "zhong."
(B) This Chinese character is read as "zhong."

(C) This Chinese character reads "zhong."
(D) This Chinese character reads as "zhong."

Q1 Are they all correct?

Q2 Which do you normally use?

Top answer

(C) is ungrammatical (this sounds like the character itself is doing the reading). The other three are okay. (B) is the one typically heard.
