Reach some sort of (an) agreement?

Let's look at the following sample sentence

Can we reach some sort of an agreement?
My question is whether you say an agreement or skip the 'an' and just say agreement. Naturally, my question applies to whatever sentence where you use "some sort of".

(Bonus question: what is 'a/an' called grammar-wise?)

Thanks!
