Reach near scomething

Is it correct to write "reach near something", for example "when he reached near the river, he saw the boats?

Top answer

"reach near something" is usually awkward. In your case, say "when he reached the river" if he had actually arrived at the river (or near enough), or something like "as he approached the river" if he hadn't quite arrived there.
