Re: teaching styles

There is no personal insult in what I said, Mr M, it was directed at all offending ESL teachers. There was mild cheeky provocation, but since I have "junior" stamped on my forehead while you have the right to "lash out", this is perhaps my perk, and hey, anyway, a weeny bit of provocation provokes discussion, which is the point after all.

I take it that Californian Jim disagrees with me. You don't think that ESL teachers often try to explain language itself when they are supposed to be explaining English? That this situation is partly due to them forgetting that there are, in fact, other languages, which is something only the arrogant anglophone is able to forget?

Since you wish to discuss, I have moved you to an appropriate forum. The thread you were posting to was a different discussion on a specific topic. I am sure that there are ESL teachers who do all sorts of horrid things.

  • Many teachers, myself included, think that neither language in general nor English in particular should be 'explained'.
  • Nevertheless, most students have little conscious knowledge about their own language, much less ESL, and need exhortation from time to time on how language works.

Sorry to interrupt, but where does this discussion lead from? It sounds interesting but how can we find out what it's about?

That is the topic thesis. The thread to which it was attached was on an unrelated lexical matter.
