Re-offend Vs reoffend

Hi

For example, someone who has committed a serious offence such as assault will need a long time in prison in order to be sure they can be re-educated not to re-offend.

Can the underlined parts be replaced by reeducated and reoffend?

Dictionaries seem to be split on re-educate / reeducate . Some prefer one, some the other. Fewer dictionaries list re- offend / reoffend , but a couple of reputable ones list reoffend as standard.

Thanks for your assured response, and thanks for the nice phrase you've used: be split on/over something. Emotion: rose
