That use of "clash" is perfectly acceptable. I would suggest, however, changing the wording of your sentence slightly:
...when one role clashes with another...
or
...when fulfillment of one role clashes with that of another that a person has to play...
...when one role clashes with another...
or
...when fulfillment of one role clashes with that of another that a person has to play...
