Why was this the answer:The woman bought an Mp3 player but it did not work instead of The woman bought a Mp3 player but it did not work?

Good question. You would think that the correct answer would be "a" Mp3 player but here, the use of "an" is an exception. It has to do with how the phrase "sounds" and its ease of pronunciation.

  • "An Mp3" sounds better to the ear, and "an Mp3" rolls off the tongue more easily than "a Mp3".
  • There are other exceptions to the rule and there may even be a better explanation than mine out there.

You're on the right track. "A" is used before a consonant sound, and "an" is used before a vowel sound.

So, on paper, it can look wrong, like "an herb".
