Vocabulary

raw (music/songs)

Hello,
What does "The band was formed last year and their music is very raw and unpretentious" suggest you? Is it similar to "rough"? The sentence gives me the idea that their music is not refined and there are certain things they need to work on.

Gene93 very raw and unpretentious" suggest you? Is it similar to "rough"? I think 'raw' here means candid and naturalistic, not undeveloped.

In the stated context, with the word "unpretentious," which is always a positive word, "raw" does not have negative connotations, but rather, positive implications to some degree, and means something like: new, elemental, fresh, unsophisticated, original, unspoiled by overexposure and success, etc.

About an hour ago I came across: "A new song by me, however, raw". The songwriter was not a native speaker, so I am not entirely sure what s/he meant by "raw".

Nor I, but since she says 'new but raw', I suggest 'unpolished'.

So I thought. Can "rough" songs and other pieces of writing be considered "unpolished/unrefined/unfinished" as well?

Yes, right. It was just not necessarily applicable in your first post.
