Raven oil, level bayonet, judge advocate

"He smelled of talcum powder and raven oil." It is a sentence from a novel taking place during the French revolution in France. What does "raven oil" mean? It is clear to me that it can't be "oil from a raven". Could it perhaps be "ravensara oil"?

From the same novel:

"Soldiers advancing slowly with level bayonets turned the mob away." What does it mean "level bayonets". I don't understand the word "level". Is it a kind of bayonet, or does it simply mean that the bayonets were "aimed".

What does it mean "judge advocate"? Is it simply an advocate at court, or does it necessarily have to do something with the army as I can see in the dictionary?

Thanks very much for your replies
