Rather than=...,not= instead of?

Please look at this sentence.

"But the student said she was shocked by the suspension,as she had only copied the version posted previously by another student, which she said was intended
as lighthearted social satire rather than serious disrespect."

In this sentence, I think "rather than" means ",not". Can I replace ",not" for "rather than" there? like " lighthearted social satire, not serious disrespect"
What about "instead of" for "rather than"?

Thank you for you answers in advance.

In this context "rather than" means "and not" or "instead of". You are almost right in understanding it. You can replace them.
