There's not much difference at all. Still, I get the impression that in the first case you may have had a legitimate reason, like being sick, but in the second case I get the impression you were just being lazy! I wouldn't use the second one to indicate that I was sick; it sounds too much to me like I just decided to go to the beach. Others may not feel the same about the shades of meaning.
