Grammar

rather than try/trying (past time reference)

Hi,
is the sentence correct?

The debaters discussed respective countries individually rather than try to define the region as a whole

What I'm wondering is what tense should be used with the verb "try"?

Could I maybe use a gerund here? And if so, wouldn't it be better to change the order of the clauses?

Rather than trying to define the region as a whole the debaters discussed respective countries individually
