rather than + ?

Hi. I have a question about this sentence .

They chose to ignore him rather than putting an end to his behavior.

Why is it 'putting'? not 'put' as past tense like 'chose'.... I don't understand. Please help me and sorry for my bad English T.T

It should be "put". "Putting" works, too, but it's bad style because it isn't parallel, and the reader senses that (as you and I have) and is distracted by it. "

If you reverse the phrases, you can see why "putting" is not strictly wrong: "Rather than putting an end to his behavior, they chose to ignore him."
