rather gently

Is it ok to use 'rather' here or is there something that would fit better?

In the moment when our skipper Brend rather gently pressed the gas pedal, there was an opportune break at Match Race, because what followed was something that even Gilmour himself wanted to look at.

MM is right: gently is nuanced enough, you don't need more nuance (double the nuance) with rather.
