rather + comparisons and too

1) The minister seemed in rather better spirits than his hosts, and apologized for keeping them all up so late.

2) He was tall and thin, with a face rather like a sad old horse

3) You were rather less pleased to see your brother this morning than you were last night.

4) '' you can't go, '' he said rather too desperately

In what ways, the rather modifies the above sentences ? what's the absolute reason for its usage ?

thanks btw

Hi, Generally speaking, 'rather' here indicates the degree. eg Mary is rather pretty. Not a little, not a lot.

I just know that..but in this case,it's been used in various ways

for instance - he said it rather too desperately

how does rather modify this ? why do we have to use it ?

Not a lot too desperately. Not a little too desperately.

why do we have to use it ? You don''t have to. It's optional. Use it if you want to tell us more about the amount of desperatio
