Rather Comma - two examples

I felt that it would be better to walk, rather than to run.

I thought it would be smarter to go with Chris, rather than to go with Mark.

Should there be a comma before "rather"?

Thanks.

What about this?

He usually dressed like everybody else, rather than the way he did on the previous day.

Is the comma before "rather" right there?

That's not a good sentence. Come up with a good "rather" sentence, and I will comment on the comma issue.

Okay, I altered it:

He usually dressed like everybody else, rather than the way he did the day before.

That's still a bad sentence.

'He should do his homework by himself, rather than always asking people to help him do it.'

Oh, okay, so the comma is needed, then. Thanks.

Why is it a bad sentence, by the way?

Snarf.....He usually dressed like everybody else, rather than the way he did the day before.
It's just an awkward sentence and is not one in which I would use "rather".

'He usually dresses like everybody else, not the way he did (the day before)(yesterday).'
