Are you keeping the apartment key with you? Or did you rather(on the contrary) give it to John?

'Rather' is wrong there, but anyway, keep it simple:

Are you keeping the apartment key with you? Or did you give it to John (instead)?

Is it fine then to use insead as in this example, in both orders?:

Is he the provider for his son? Or did he (instead) leave him to his helpless grandmother (instead)?
