"Rather"


Are all the sentences below correct, please?

The summer job was rather relaxing.

The city’s summer youth program is rather interesting.

Those machines are rather cheap.

This umbrella is rather new.

The train was rather fast.

The candidates were rather young.

The questions complex are rather clear.

The child was rather thin.

You could say this, for example:

- The questions are rather complex.

sorry i want to ask something. i chcek the word out from dictionary which shows that the definition is fairly or to some degree.

for example "I was rather surprised to see him with his ex-wife."

If i change rather to quite/not in this sentence, are they still same meaning?

I think "rather" falls somewhere between "somewhat" and "quite." I find "quite" to be stronger than "rather."

Others may disagree, and there are other words that can be inserted in this spectrum, but I don't see "quite" as interchangable with "rather."

Thank you for the help. Concerning the sentence "the questions complex are rather clear", sorry! That was a typing mistake.In fact I wanted to say: "the questions are rather clear".
