Question

Hey! Im trying to find out how to translate "c um laude" in eglish. At university in Belgium we get grades on 20points. For example, when you score 18/20 there's a word for it. A certain grade is given to you. But what is this in English? Are there international terms?

In Latin, 'c um laude' means 'with praise'.
In English, such Latin phrases are often left in Latin.

Grading in schools in the US can be quite subjective, and can vary greatly with the teacher. For example, in high school and college, in your various courses, the grade you get in the course for the semester might be based on how you score (what grade you get) on: tests, quizzes (small tests), papers, homework assignments, projects, extra credit work, classroom participation, classroom attendance (if you're totally floundering in the course, be sure to attend every class; just this alone might save you from failing the course), etc. For example, you might have two tests during the semester: one at the middle or the semester (a "midterm"), and one at the end of the semester (a "final"). These would usually be graded: A, B, C, D, or F, or sometimes, A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, etc. Some teachers might give them number grades: 0 to 100, or 0 to 4, or some other range of numbers. Similary with quizzes, papers, and projects.

Homework assignments, etc. might be graded as above, or might be given, for example, just a +, -, or 0.

At the end of the semester, the instructor with somehow total up all the various scores to come up with a letter grade for the course, typically A, B, C, D, or F. This can be quite a subjective process.

A student also accumulates a "grade point average (GPA)," which is a numerical score of how he has done in all courses. For the purpose of calculating the GPA, and A in a course is given a numerical value of 4, B a 3, C a 2, D a 1, and F a 0. Thus, a student might have a GPA of, say, 3.1, which translates roughly to slightly better than "B" work overall. A student with a "4.0 (pronounced: "our point oh" GPA" has gotten A's in all courses. If you've got a 3.0 GPA, or better, you're going well.

In college, I believe a person graduates "*** laude" if he has better than a 3.0, "magna *** laude" if he has much better than a 3.0, and "summa *** laude" if "summa *** laude" if he has a near 4.0 GPA.
