In all cases "A" indicates the subject as being in the singular, so the verb should also be in the singular.

To use the plural:

Wide ranges of topics have been researched
Many varieties of products are on offer
Numbers of people are going.

Hi,

I just want to offer some advisory cautioins to leanrers. Things are not always what they appear to be. When we use collective nouns, don't be too quick to fall into the automatic mode because something appears to be either plural or singular. Following is a list of comparisons on collective nouns. Although the noun may be in plural form, it does not mean an amtomatic plural verb. Sometimes, even institutional writers have conflicting views.

[ A group of people ] in these contexts clearly is considered plural here

[a consortium of scientists ] is singular here.

[ a group of students] are

[a fleet of ships] were/ are

[a wide variety of choices] is
