Vocabulary

'range to/through', 'manually', 'key/button', 'auditive/auditor/aural'

A couple of questions for those of you who know the answers...

1.
I encounter both:
range from * to *
and
range from * through *

Is there a semantic difference? The second seems to be used with ages (their ages ranged from 13 through 17). Is that the difference or does the second mean something like "up to and including"?

2.
If I want to say I start a computer programme using a certain key instead of automatically could I use the word "manually" as in: He started the test manually.
Or should I use an other word?

3.
A computer media player has keys/buttons on the screen to play, pause, rewind etc. the video. Are those things called "keys" or "buttons"?

4.
Can somebody explain me the difference between auditive / aural / auditory? I'm specifically interested in what to use together with "word recognition" as opposed to visual word recognition, but all general comments on the use of the three words above are very welcome.

5.
One last (grammar) question:
If I want to write: 'The sound and image of the video .... do I continue with 'was checked' or 'were checked'

I'm looking for the Br Eng equivalents if there are any Br/Am distinctions but other information is of course welcome as well.

Thanks for helping me out! Chrissy

Hi Chrissy. 1-- Some consider that through includes the final item of the range, where to excludes it. In most cases, the inclusion/exclusion is either obvious or irrelevant.
