Hi

Is this sentence natural?

(the person made sure that he was not recorded in the CCTV footage.)

He was smart enough and stood away from the range of the camera.

Or this?

He was smart enough and stood outside the range of the camera.

Mr. TomHe was smart enough and stood outside the range of the camera.

This is better. It's understandable but not as likely as saying out of range or out of sight.
