I'm telling a person about an action that happened right before we started talking. Should I use:

He just randomly handed me the phone. Or

He just randomly hands me the phone.

Here's the situation:

We're walking out of a hotel and my friend hands me the phone and it's someone I've never talked to in my life and for some reason the guy on the phone thinks that I have something important to tell him.

So I go:

I have no idea what to say, 'cause James just randomly handed me the phone. Or

I have no idea what to say, 'cause James just ra

The text meaning the 'dialogue', not the words to describe the situation.

For example:

Person A: Hello!
Person B: Hello!
A: How are you?
B: I'm OK. Thank you
etc.......

It started and ended w/ what I typed since I had nothing to say at that moment I just gave the phone back to my friend.

My question is should I have used hands or handed at that moment where the situation had taken place.
