As the young son of a country veterinarian who visited many farms and ranches, I spoke with many
farm and ranch owners. Farms raise crops. Ranches raise animals (usually cows, horses, pigs, and other marketable 2 and 4 legged animals). The Ranchers used to joke, "Our animals here on the ranch eat the farmer's crops!

My dad has several hundred acres almost as much as our large cattle ranch but since he grows hay for a profit he is called a "farmer" due to his main income being from something that is a crop and not livestock.
