Ran in any way true to form

Hi

Miss Mayfield came to Mrs Baines home to ask her about Mrs Rigby who used some black magic. Mrs Baines knew a lot about the black magic which Mrs Rigby used but didn't want to tell her anything.

Miss Mayfield thought to herself:

If Rigby’s cult ran in any way true to form, Miss Mayfield could imagine how

very distasteful a brush with it must have been to a woman

of Mrs Baines’ nature.

Does it mean that if Mrs Rigby's magic worked as it should then it must have been really distasteful to Mrs Baines?

I'm not sure if this is what is meant by "cult" and "run true to form"?

I'm not sure if this is what is meant by "cult" and "run true to form"? Basically yes. "Run true to form" means that "she behaved in the usual way/as expected" or more precisely her cult (personality cult) lived up to its expectations.

Hi

I'm not sure I understood.

So, does it say that if Rigby's personality cult was as it should be then Miss Mayfield could imagine how distasteful it must have been for Mrs Baines to get in touch with it?

How do you understand the original sentence?

The way I see it from the short description you gave is that Rigby's cult is nurtured by her practicing black magic. So for me, the sentence simply says that if Rigby did some black magic in Mrs Baines presence , she (Mrs Baines) must have been appaled by it. (and Miss Mayfiled could imagine that situaton easily).

I don't think it's so much about the seanse/session being successful or no
