rally past?

Hi, everyone:

The Mavericks held the Suns to 42 second-half points and rallied past Phoenix for a 102-93 win in Game 6 on Saturday night.

Could anyone tell me what's the meaning of "held...to" and "rallied past' in the sentence ?

Thank you in advance!

The Mavericks kept Suns from scoring more than 42 points during the 2nd half (didn't allow them to score more) Rallied past - rebounded against (I guess they recovered from an unfavorable score and beat the opponents)

Hi,

I'd like to add a brief comment.

A sports writer might say A rallied past B, but more standard English would be A rallied to pass B.

Sportswriters have their own approach to journalistic English. I wouldn't recommend trying to learn standard English and good grammar
